Gervonta “Tank” Davis 21 (20 KOs)-0-0 looks to defend his WBA Super-Featherweight title this Saturday against Panamas Ricardo Nunez 21 (19 KOs)-2 (1 KO)-0 at the Royal Farms arena in his hometown of Baltimore broadcast on Showtime in the USA.

These articles are often hard to write for a number of reasons, whether you think the fight is particularly one sided, if the fight is between two fighters who are never going to reach top level, or, most commonly if either or both fighters have an extremely boring style. What hasn’t happened often is that I know next to nothing about one of the opponents and I cant find anything online either.

This Saturday’s fight between Tank Davis and Nunez is one of those fights. The only solid bit of video that I’ve managed to find is a 90 second highlights video for Nunez so this is going to be shorter than usual. From what I can gather Nunez doesn’t have especially quick hands and doesn’t move his head coming in a lot. What he does have, looking at his record is power, though if his power is real it doesn’t look like it’s delivered with a lot of speed. Also, his record is the definition of padded, fighting only once out of his home of Panama in a first-round knockout of an undefeated Mexican who’s record looked equally padded as Nunez. To put it in perspective his last opponent had 30 losses, and at this point I’ve run out of things to say.

Tank Davis is someone who I’m much more familiar with primarily because he is pretty much my favourite fighter to watch inside the ring, I flip flop between him and Canelo. The combination of speed, power and extremely underrated skills is for me the perfect mix for the purists and the casuals. I made a whole video how Davis despite being named Tank, is really a front foot counter puncher. Slips open left hooks to the body or back hand uppercuts, and steps and pulls give straight left openings. The video is below.

I wont fanboy all day because I should keep it professional, or professional-ish. So, I’ll go out on a limb and say that I don’t see this fight going more than three rounds and I think it’ll be over in the 2nd to be honest. A slow-moving pressure fighter is cat nip to Tank and I think he’ll pick him to pieces.

It’s worth saying that while I’m a fan of Davis in the ring I haven’t exactly been a fan out of the ring with lackluster opposition with a feud with Mayweather not exactly helping the situation. I’ve heard stories but can’t say anything definite, do your research if you want.

What I hope is that Tank will eventually get good opposition through the door, because I wouldn’t want a fighter of his talent and entertainment to have a record that can be considered what some of his opponents are “padded”.

On the undercard Yuriorkis Gamboa 29 (17 KOs)-2 (2 KOs)-0 faces off against veteran Roman “Rocky” Martinez 30 (18 KOs)-3 (2 KOs)-3 in his second fight coming off a three year layoff after the Lomachenko fight.
