Watch the series premiere of DAZN’s first original episodic program, THE JOURNEY: CANELO/ROCKY, to go behind the scenes as Canelo Alvarez and Rocky Fielding prepare for their historic showdown.
Saul Alvarez 50-1-2 34 KO’s, is aiming to be a three weight world champion when it takes on newly crowned WBA Super Middleweight Champion Rocky Fielding 27-1-0 15 KO’s, at Madison Square Garden, New York, USA and exclusively live on DAZN and Sky Sports. Back to back tough fights against GGG have maybe taken their toll on Canelo and this move up to 168lbs is a smart move on Goldenboy’s part as he is facing a champion they must feel is very beatable and it wont be as tough of a fight than if he faced with one of the other champions at 168lbs and if he is victorious it will mean the door is open to potential catchweight fights between Super Middleweight and Middleweight.
Canelo is considered to be the number one Boxing superstar in the world at the minute and there are massive fights out there for him after this contest, lots of people are calling his name from Middleweight like with GGG looking for revenge and a third fight, to Jermall Charlo, Billy Joe Saunders, Daniel Jacobs, then in Super Middleweight we have potential fights against current Belt holders Callum Smith, Jose Uzcategui and Gilberto Ramirez which would be an excellent all Mexican affair. Then as the WBC Super Middleweight belt is currently vacant there could possibly be options there as well but he must get pas Rocky Fielding first.
A lot of people are writing Rocky Fielding off before he even steps into the ring which I think is hugely disrespectful, yes he got KO’d by Callum smith in his last defeat but it was also his only defeat in twenty eight fights and he has fought his whole career at Super Middleweight while this is Canelo’s first fight at this weight.
Like all boxers they come in heavier on fight night but how will Canelo deal with being the smaller man this time around as he is giving up a big height and reach advantage and as he is normally so used to being the bigger man on the night, he won’t be able to impose himself as quickly as he would normally do and I think the opening rounds might be a bit cagy as he tries to find his feet at this new weight.
These opening rounds are the time Rocky will have to try and impose himself and show Canelo he means business, Fielding does have the power to trouble most fighters but with Canelo looking to cement his status as a legendary boxer and global superstar Fielding will no doubt be aware this is the toughest fight off his life and if he was to come through it, it will catapult him into the limelight and set up a huge rematch with Callum Smith or a unification fight with one of the other champions at 168lbs.
I have to admit I am a huge fan of the way Canelo fights and the British in me wants to see Fielding do well, but I just think Canelo will have too much skill for Fielding and he will see out an unanimous points victory at the end of the fight.
