[FIGHT WEEK] RETURN OF THE JACKAL

29TH JULY, SSE ARENA, BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND

After two years on the road Belfast’s former two weight world champion is returning home in a WBC World Featherweight title eliminator against Mexico’s Andres Gutierrez. This will be Frampton’s first fight since losing his WBA Super World Featherweight title at the hands of Leo Santa Cruz in January this year. Almost a year to the day Carl won his WBA world title stripping Leo Santa Cruz of the title, he will be facing another Mexican and will be looking to go some way to putting his first professional defeat behind him.

2016 Ring Magazine, BBBofC and BWAA ‘Fighter of the Year’ Carl Frampton will be fighting in his home town in what is sure to be a very hostile atmosphere for Gutierrez. Once the sound of Sweet Caroline blasts out from the speakers Belfast goes into meltdown the tempo is raised the atmosphere is electric and the noise will lift the roof of the SSE arena ‘welcome to the Jackal’s den!’ Words of intent coming from Frampton today at the press conference, “I respect Andres a lot, but is my city, I’m the boss, and I’m going to win.”

Gutierrez like Frampton has only the one blemish on his record reading an impressive 35 (25)-1-1 to Frampton’s 23 (14)-1-0. He is also ranked by the WBC in the top ten in the world, nicknamed Jaguarcito he is said to be the most avoided fighter in the division. Having a closer look at his opponents his only world class opposition came in the form of former unified world champion Cristian Mijares who beat him to take away his unbeaten record via a controversial majority points decision. Being involved in this title eliminator Gutierrez said “I know I have a great opportunity and I will not waste it.”

If Gutierrez was to be defeated he is still young at the age of twenty three and will have plenty of time and opportunities to bounce back in the hunt for a world title, Frampton on the other hand, this is a must win and defeat could send him into retirement. Hats off to Frampton for taking on the dangerous Gutierrez, but hats or sombreros off also to Gutierrez for jumping head first into the Jackal’s den unlike other Mexicans in recent memory.
