‘Turbo’ Terry Flanagan 32 (13 KO’s)-0-0 V Petr Petrov ‘Zar’ 38 (19 KO’s)-4-2
WBO World Lightweight Title

Terry Flanagan has big plans for the future and it appears he has one eye on these big money fights but he has to get past the seasoned veteran from Russia Petr Petrov first. Flanagan is flying high at the minute with a 32 for 0 record but has he really come up against a top world class fighter yet? Like the fighters he hopes to fight after this contest? I am not so sure.

In theory you could say Flanagan record is a bit inflated, although he does appear to be a solid fighter, he doesn’t have marquee names on his record, he doesn’t appear to have real knock out power as he has only won thirteen of his thirty two bouts by way of knockout, and mixed with the fact he has only fought one fighter (Jose Zepeda) with an unbeaten record before the fight this is leading me to think his record appears on paper anyway as a bit inflated. Flanagan is a good fighter but I feel we haven’t seen the best of him yet against the better caliber of opponents out there.

With the possibility of Jorge Linares fighting Mikey Garcia next, it would mean that if he wanted a second Lightweight title he would have to go after Robert Easter Jnr who holds the IBF title, but there is talk about him facing his long-time friend Anthony Crolla or the possibility off jumping up to Super Lightweight/Jnr Welterweight to face Ricky Burns if he was to overcome Julius Indogo in their contest on the 15th April  2017. As tempting as I am sure it is for Flanagan with the possibility to fight Crolla or Burns I am not sure these fights will happen anytime soon as I think Turbo Terry Flanagan will want to try and dominate the lightweight division first before even entertaining the idea. I think Flanagan will have to make a statement in this fight to show the other champions he means business.

Petr Petrov is seasoned veteran of the sport who is currently ranked #1 for the WBA, and #2 for the WBO Lightweight Belt, he first made his debut way back in the year 2000 and he is currently having a bit of a resurgence at the minute as he is unbeaten in six fights dating back to 2014, he has acquired some stepping stone belts in those six fights, namely  WBO-NABO ((Interim) North American Boxing Orgnization), WBA-NABA (North American Boxing Association), and the NABF (North American Boxing Federation) lightweight titles.

Winning these belts got him a fight for a World Lightweight Title eliminator, were he was drafted in to fight a up and coming fighter from the Goldenboy stable called Michael Perez, before the fight Oscar De La Hoya had this to say about Petrov: “We also know Petrov as an experienced and destructive fighter who won’t go down without an all-out brawl.”

Petrov won that fight convincingly when he wasn’t expected to so he is full of confidence and won’t be fazed by what Flanagan throws at him, if another upset is on the cards it will be a big shock to the boxing community but you never know in Boxing.

If Flanagan isn’t at his best I can see this one going the distance but hopefully it is just a great fight for everyone to watch.
